Are You Sleepwalking Spiritually? A Call to Wake Up in Christ

Arise O’ Sleeper

Introduction

Are You Sleepwalking?

Are you spiritually awake? Learn about spiritual awakening devotion and the importance of active faith in your daily life. “But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says,“Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”Ephesians 5:13–14  It is possible to move through life appearing awake—attending church, saying prayers, doing “the right things”—yet spiritually be asleep. The motions are there, but the heart is distant. Paul’s words are not directed at the world alone, but at believers who may have grown comfortable, distracted, or dulled by routine. His call is urgent: Wake up!

Scripture gives several vivid warnings about spiritual sleepwalking:

  • Drifting – “We must pay the most careful attention… so that we do not drift away” (Hebrews 2:1).
  • Hardening – “Encourage one another daily… so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness” (Hebrews 3:13).
  • Drowsiness – The virgins who grew sleepy while waiting for the bridegroom (Matthew 25:5).
  • Blindness – “Ever seeing but never perceiving” (Isaiah 6:9).

These are not sudden falls—they are slow fades. A heart once tender becomes indifferent. A faith once vibrant becomes routine. A passion once burning becomes lukewarm.

Spiritual sleep doesn’t announce itself loudly. It creeps in quietly through distraction, comfort, and complacency. We begin to rely on yesterday’s fire instead of seeking today’s presence of God.

But Paul’s message cuts through the fog: “Awake, O sleeper!” This is not a gentle suggestion—it is a call to action. God is always ready to revive, restore, and reignite the heart that turns back to Him.

A.W. Tozer once said, “The complacency of Christians is the scandal of Christianity.” Those words challenge us to examine whether we are merely going through motions or truly walking in the light of Christ.

The enemy whispers that awakening is outdated—that revival is a thing of the past. But God has not changed. His power to awaken hearts is just as real today as it has ever been.

When we respond to God’s call, something remarkable happens: “Christ will shine on you.” His light exposes, yes—but it also heals, restores, and leads us into renewed purpose.

Life Application

Today is a perfect opportunity to check your spiritual alertness:

  • Are you spending intentional time with God, or just fitting Him in?
  • Has your faith become routine rather than relational?
  • Is there an area where you feel spiritually numb or distant?

Wake up by taking simple, intentional steps:

  • Spend focused time in prayer and Scripture today.
  • Ask God to reveal any areas of drift or complacency.
  • Act on what He shows you—obedience rekindles fire.

Faith was never meant to be sleepwalked—it was meant to be lived with purpose, passion, and awareness of God’s presence.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, awaken my heart today. Shake me from any complacency or distraction that keeps me from fully walking with You. Open my eyes to see clearly, my ears to hear Your voice, and my heart to respond with obedience. Let Your light shine on me and through me, that I may live fully alive in Christ. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
