Introduction

The Only Thing That Counts

Explore how faith expressing itself in love is essential for genuine spirituality and deeper connection with God.  “The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself in love.” – Galatians 5:6

It is possible to look very faithful on the outside while feeling spiritually dry on the inside. We attend services, say prayers, give offerings, and try to do good deeds. Yet sometimes, if we are honest, we practice our faith out of habit or obligation rather than joyful love. Paul cuts through every religious performance with one powerful statement: the only thing that counts is faith expressing itself in love.

Reflection

The Apostle Paul wrote Galatians to believers who were being pulled back toward rule-keeping as a way of proving their righteousness. In chapter five, he reminds them that outward rituals—circumcision, traditions, religious checklists—do not make one right with God. What matters is living faith that naturally expresses itself through love.

Consider Abraham. Scripture tells us that his faith was credited to him as righteousness (Genesis 15:6). Abraham did not earn God’s approval through flawless behavior. He stumbled, doubted and  made mistakes. Yet he trusted God. That trust—imperfect but persistent—was counted as righteousness.

The same is true for you.

Our faith is not a polished performance. It is a work in progress. We stumble, then we get back up. We question, then we cling to God’s promises again. And through it all, the Holy Spirit patiently shapes our hearts.

When we shift our focus from obligation to love, something beautiful happens. Instead of asking, “What must I do?” we begin asking, “How can I love?” Instead of measuring our spirituality by attendance or activity, we measure it by compassion, kindness, forgiveness, and grace.

Faith becomes visible.

Proverbs 23:7 says, “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.” What fills our hearts eventually shapes our actions. When our hearts are filled with the unconditional love of God, our lives naturally reflect it. Love becomes our moral compass. Forgiveness becomes our reflex. Generosity becomes our joy.

We begin to take on the image of Christ living within us. Through the Holy Spirit, we start seeing people not as interruptions or inconveniences, but as souls deeply loved by God. We respond not with pride, but with humility. Not with resentment, but with mercy.

This is what Paul meant.

The only thing that truly counts is not religious activity. It is not outward compliance. It is faith—real, living faith—expressing itself in love.

Life Application

Today, pause and ask yourself:

  • Am I serving God out of obligation or out of love?
  • Is my faith visible in the way I treat others?
  • Do my actions reflect the love Christ has shown me?

Start small. Offer a kind word. Extend forgiveness. Show patience in a frustrating moment. These are not grand religious gestures—but they are powerful expressions of faith in action.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for loving me first. Forgive me when I reduce my faith to routine or obligation. Fill my heart with Your unconditional love so that my life reflects Your grace. Teach me to live out my faith in simple, powerful acts of kindness and forgiveness. Let the only thing that counts in my life be faith expressing itself in love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
