Steadfast love

“What is desired in a man is steadfast love.” — Proverbs 19:22 In today’s world, personal development is a billion-dollar industry. People hire life coaches, personal trainers, and therapists to improve their physical and emotional appeal. But the Bible points to something far more enduring: steadfast love. At first glance, this proverb might seem to describe what women desire in men. But the message goes deeper—it’s a truth that transcends gender. In all relationships, whether family, friends, or community, the most treasured trait is kindness that doesn’t waver.

Modern psychology backs this up. Kindness is consistently ranked as the most desired character trait in people. Interestingly, Paul also lists “kindness” as a fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22, alongside love and faithfulness. These qualities grow in us when we walk with the Holy Spirit. A steadfast love is unwavering. It forgives, endures, and stays through the storms of life. It’s the kind of love God shows us—unconditional, ever-present, and full of grace. Solomon’s use of the word “desired” hints at a journey. We’re not perfect, but we are works in progress. As Paul reminds us, “He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ” (Philippians 1:6). So today, let’s keep working toward that “desired steadfast love.” Let us love with patience and consistency, empowered by God’s Spirit.
