What Does It Mean to Say ‘I Believe’?

When we say, I believe, what should we mean by that? James 2:19 tells us, “You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder.” It’s clear: believing in our head isn’t enough. Biblical belief requires more than intellectual agreement—it demands our full surrender. We must completely commit our body, mind, and soul to Jesus Christ. Jesus warned in Matthew 7:21–23, “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven.” It’s not enough to talk the talk—we must walk the walk.

I Believe – Brings Transformation

True saving faith brings transformation. It requires us to fully believe in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. Once we have such saving faith, the Holy Spirit dwells within us. His power begins the process of change, helping us become more like Jesus. This is not optional—it is evidence of genuine faith.

As Jesus told Thomas in John 20:29, “Because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who accept me  without seeing.” If we claim to have saving faith  but remain unchanged—if there is no evidence of Jesus in our lives—then we must examine our hearts. We may be saying “I believe” with our lips, but our hearts are far from Him. Without the fruit of transformation, we are lost—we are not saved. Phil Wickham’s I Believe beautifully expresses this heart-deep faith. Let his song stir your soul—and ask yourself honestly: Do I truly have saving faith?
