At Home with the Lord: Go Rest High on That Mountain

Go Rest High on That Mountain

At home with the Lord is the Christian’s sure hope. Find comfort in grief as God’s Word promises rest, joy, and new life in Jesus Christ.  Few things in life hurt like saying goodbye. Maybe you have stood beside a hospital bed or sat in the front row of a funeral home. If so, you know how heavy that silence can feel. However, Scripture does not leave us standing at the grave. Instead, it lifts our eyes to a mountain of hope, where everyone who belongs to Jesus is safe at home with Him.

Opening Worship Song: Be Still, My Soul

This beloved hymn, sung to Jean Sibelius’s majestic tune Finlandia, reminds us that the Lord is on our side even in sorrow. Its closing verse looks ahead to the day we will be with the Lord forever, so it is a perfect way to prepare our hearts today.

Scripture Focus

Paul begins by telling us where believers truly belong.

“Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord.” (2 Corinthians 5:8, ESV)

Next, he reminds us that our citizenship is already in heaven, and that Jesus will one day make us new.

“But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.” (Philippians 3:20–21, ESV)

John then shows us the very heart of heaven: God living with His people.

“And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.'” (Revelation 21:3, ESV)

David describes what it will be like to stand in God’s presence.

“You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” (Psalm 16:11, ESV)

Jesus reveals that heaven is already a place of celebration whenever a sinner comes home.

“Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.” (Luke 15:7, ESV)

Finally, Peter tells us where to fix our hope while we wait.

“Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” (1 Peter 1:13, ESV)

Together, these verses paint a beautiful picture of the home Jesus is preparing for us. So let’s consider what that promise means for our lives today, especially when our hearts are heavy.

Life Application

The Story Behind the Song

Vince Gill began writing “Go Rest High on That Mountain” in 1989, after his friend and fellow country singer Keith Whitley died far too young. For years, though, the song sat unfinished. Then, in 1993, Vince’s older brother Bob died suddenly of a heart attack. That loss broke his heart open, and the words finally came. As a result, a song born in grief became one of the most beloved funeral songs in America.

The verses are honest about how hard life can be. They speak of burdens, trials, and tears. Then the chorus rises like a hymn. It pictures a loved one laying down every weight and resting peacefully on a high mountain, finally free from pain.

At Home with the Lord

Paul gives that picture a firm foundation. In 2 Corinthians 5:8, he says he would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. Notice the word “home.” Heaven is not a waiting room or a strange country. For the believer, it is where we truly belong.

Similarly, Philippians 3:20 reminds us that our citizenship is already in heaven. We are travelers here, carrying a passport stamped by the grace of God. Moreover, Jesus promises to transform our lowly, tired bodies to be like His glorious body. Every ache, every illness, and every limitation will be gone.

Revelation 21:3 then shows us the heart of heaven. It is not merely a beautiful place. Rather, it is the dwelling place of God with His people. The very best part of heaven is Jesus Himself.

Joy That Waits for Us

Psalm 16:11 says that in God’s presence there is fullness of joy. That means not partial joy, and not joy mixed with sorrow. Instead, it is full joy, with pleasures forevermore.

Even now, heaven is a joyful place. In Luke 15:7, Jesus said heaven rejoices over one sinner who repents. In other words, the door to that mountain is open to anyone who turns to Christ. If you have never trusted Him, today can be the day heaven celebrates you.

Hope for Those Left Behind

Perhaps you are grieving right now. Christian grief is still grief, and tears are not a lack of faith. After all, Jesus wept at the tomb of His friend Lazarus. Nevertheless, we do not grieve as those who have no hope.

So how do we live with this hope today? First, take your sorrow honestly to the Lord in prayer. Next, speak your loved one’s name, and thank God for their life. Then follow Peter’s counsel in 1 Peter 1:13 and set your hope fully on the grace Jesus will bring when He returns.

Finally, remember this. For those in Christ, goodbye is never the last word. Because Jesus rose from the grave, our loved ones who trusted Him are at home with the Lord. One day, by His grace, we will join them there.

A Word of Encouragement

“Someday you will read in the papers that D. L. Moody of East Northfield is dead. Don’t you believe a word of it! At that moment I shall be more alive than I am now.”
— D. L. Moody, as recorded by his son, W. R. Moody, in The Life of Dwight L. Moody

Moody went on to say that he would simply have “gone up higher.” What a fitting picture for today’s devotion. For the believer, death is not the end of the road. Instead, it is the final climb up the mountain and into the arms of Jesus.

A Prayer for Today

Heavenly Father, thank You for the hope we have in Jesus. Thank You that death does not have the final word for those who trust in Him. Lord, comfort every heart that is grieving today. Hold them close, and remind them that their loved ones in Christ are safe at home with You. Help us live as citizens of heaven while we walk here on earth. Give us wisdom for each day and strength for every burden. Most of all, help us set our hope fully on Your grace until the day we see Jesus face to face. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Closing Worship Song: Go Rest High on That Mountain

Vince Gill’s heartfelt ballad carries the full weight of grief and the soaring hope of heaven in a single song. As you listen, picture every believer you have loved, resting at last in the presence of the Savior.
