God Is The Potter

The Sovereign Potter

God the Potter shaped you on purpose. Discover how your unique design and gifts fit His Master Plan, and step boldly into His calling today.  It is a normal reaction to “wonder as you wander” (a friendly nod to our Sunday writer, Bill) why God made you the way He did. Maybe you have asked that question quietly in prayer. Perhaps you have asked it out loud on a hard day. Either way, the Bible gives us a wonderful answer. God holds the Master Plan, and He never makes a mistake with His clay.

Opening Worship Song

“I Wonder As I Wander” is a beloved Appalachian carol that marvels at why Jesus would come to die for ordinary people like you and me. Let it open your heart to the wonder of a God who made you and loves you.

Scripture Focus

Paul answers the honest question every heart eventually asks: “Why did God make me like this?”

19 You will say to me then, “Why does he still find fault? For who can resist his will?” 20 But who are you, O man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder, “Why have you made me like this?”

— Romans 9:19–20 (ESV)

The prophet Isaiah reminds us who holds the clay.

But now, O LORD, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand.

— Isaiah 64:8 (ESV)

Paul also explains why God made each of us so different.

4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. 7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.

11 All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.

— 1 Corinthians 12:4–7, 11 (ESV)

Finally, we learn that the Potter shaped us with good works in mind.

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

— Ephesians 2:10 (ESV)

So what do these verses mean for you today? Let’s sit down together and take a closer look.

Life Application: Shaped by God the Potter

When We Wonder Why

Let’s be honest. At some point, most of us have looked in the mirror and asked God, “Why did You make me like this?” Maybe you wished you were taller, quicker, bolder, or more gifted. Perhaps you compared yourself to someone at church and came up short in your own eyes.

That reaction is normal. In fact, Paul expected it in Romans 9. However, his answer is not harsh. Instead, it is an invitation to trust. The clay cannot see the whole design, but the Potter can.

Think of it this way. A potter never makes a vessel by accident. Every curve, every handle, and every rim serves a purpose. Likewise, God shaped your body, your mind, your personality, and your story on purpose. Because He is sovereign, nothing about you surprised Him.

God Holds the Master Plan

Have you ever thought how dysfunctional our country would be if we were all made alike? Imagine a hospital full of surgeons with no nurses. Now picture a church full of preachers with no one to greet visitors, rock babies in the nursery, or pray quietly in the back row. Nothing would work.

That is exactly Paul’s point in 1 Corinthians 12. There are many gifts, many kinds of service, and many activities. Yet there is one Spirit, one Lord, and one God working through them all. Most importantly, the Spirit gives gifts to each believer individually, as He wills.

In other words, your differences are not defects. They are design features. God the Potter made you precisely so that you fit and function in the body of Christ. Therefore, your gift is not meant to sit on a shelf. It is meant for the common good.

Above all, remember who the Master Potter is. Ephesians 2:10 says we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus. Jesus did not merely design you; He redeemed you at the cross. As a result, you belong to Him twice: once by creation and once by salvation.

Don’t Wait for Perfect

Decorated World War II General George S. Patton once said, “A good plan, violently executed now, is better than a perfect plan next week.”

Here is where many of us struggle. We know God has a purpose for us, yet we delay. We wait until we feel more ready, more qualified, or less busy. Meanwhile, the opportunity quietly passes by.

God’s timing is always perfect, but our hesitation rarely is. So if He has placed someone on your heart, call them today. If you sense a nudge to serve, volunteer this week. And if you have been sitting on a gift, put it to work for His glory.

Clay in Willing Hands

Finally, let the Potter keep shaping you. Clay that resists becomes brittle, but clay that yields becomes useful. Pray, open His Word, and say yes when He calls.

You were made by God the Potter, for His purpose, at just the right time. Consequently, you have every reason for hope. The hands that shaped you are the same hands that were nailed to the cross for you. They will never let you go.

A Word of Encouragement

“Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.”

— Corrie ten Boom

You may not know every detail of the Master Plan. Nevertheless, you know the Master. That is more than enough.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for making me exactly as You did. Forgive me for the times I have questioned Your design or compared myself to others. Thank You for the gifts Your Spirit has given me, and help me use them for the good of Your people. Lord, when I am tempted to wait for the perfect moment, give me courage to obey You today. Keep shaping me, Master Potter, into a vessel that brings honor to Jesus. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Closing Worship Song

“The Potter’s Hand” by Darlene Zschech and Hillsong Worship is a heartfelt prayer of surrender. It asks the Lord to take us, mold us, and use us for His purpose, which is the perfect response to today’s message.
