Scripture Focus
Mark’s Gospel gives us a front-row seat to one of the most intimate moments Jesus shared with His closest friends.
“And after six days Jesus taketh with him Peter, and James, and John, and leadeth them up into an high mountain apart by themselves: and he was transfigured before them. And his raiment became shining, exceeding white as snow; so as no fuller on earth can white them.” — Mark 9:2–3 (KJV)
Later, Jesus made a promise that still holds true for every small gathering of believers today.

Jesus Chose Companionship
Peter, James, and John were not simply Jesus’ disciples; they were His inner circle. He invited them up the mountain to witness the Transfiguration, a moment so glorious that His face shone like the sun. He also brought them into the Garden of Gethsemane, where His soul was overwhelmed with sorrow. And when He raised Jairus’s daughter from the dead, these same three friends stood beside Him. From dazzling glory to gut-wrenching grief, Jesus chose to have trusted friends near Him through it all.
We Were Never Meant to Go It Alone
Notice something powerful here: Jesus did not attempt His most significant, most emotional moments in isolation. If the Son of God valued close companionship, how much more do we need it? Many people quietly believe that strength means handling everything by themselves. However, Scripture consistently points us toward community. God created us for relationship, first with Him, and then with one another.
What an Inner Circle Provides
An inner circle does not need to be large. In fact, it usually works best when kept small and intentional. Consider what this kind of relationship offers:
- Someone to pray with during uncertain seasons.
- Someone to celebrate with when God answers prayer.
- Someone to speak truth in love when we drift.
- Someone to simply sit beside us during grief.
Because relationships like these require vulnerability, they can feel risky to build. Nevertheless, the reward far outweighs the risk. A trusted friend who points us toward Christ becomes one of God’s clearest gifts in our daily walk.
Jesus Is Always Present
Matthew 18:20 offers a beautiful bonus to this truth. Whenever two or three gather in Jesus’ name, He promises to be right there in the midst of them. Therefore, our inner circle is never just us; Christ Himself becomes an active, honorary member of every gathering rooted in His name. As a result, our small group prayer times, our kitchen-table conversations, and our late-night phone calls with a trusted friend all become sacred spaces where Jesus draws near.
Identify Your Inner Circle Today
Take a moment today and think honestly about who fills this role in your life. If no one comes to mind right away, ask God to bring someone alongside you. Meanwhile, consider becoming that trusted friend for someone else. Ultimately, community was never optional in the Christian life; it was always part of God’s design for a flourishing faith.
