Scripture Focus

Philippians 3:7-8 (English Standard Version)

“But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ.”

Acts 4:12 (English Standard Version)

“And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

1 Corinthians 1:18 (English Standard Version)

“For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.”

Proverbs 23:7 (King James Version)

“For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.”

Life Application

What Is Your Value System?

Every one of us lives by a value system, whether we have written it down or not. Our values shape our choices, our priorities, our schedules, and even our definition of success. Therefore, the question is not whether we have a value system. The real question is, “What sits at the top of mine?”

Paul gives us a remarkable answer through his own life. Before he encountered Christ, Paul had an impressive religious resume. He came from the people of Israel and the tribe of Benjamin; was a Hebrew of Hebrews and a Pharisee, was  zealous for the law and had persecuted the church. In human terms, Paul had credentials that could make a person proud.

Yet everything changed when Paul encountered Jesus.

Suddenly, the things that once gave Paul confidence no longer occupied first place. He did not say that his education, heritage, abilities, or accomplishments had no value whatsoever. Instead, he placed them in their proper position. Compared with knowing Christ, they could never compete.

That is the heart of a Christian value system.

Our culture often measures value through position, possessions, influence, education, appearance, achievements, and financial success. Those things may have legitimate purposes. However, none of them can provide salvation, eternal security, or the deep joy that comes from knowing Jesus Christ as Lord.

Consider your own life for a moment. What receives your best attention? What occupies your thoughts when you wake up? Where does your time go? What causes you the greatest excitement? What loss would feel unbearable?

Those questions can reveal our true priorities.

Moreover, Jesus does not ask us to despise every earthly responsibility. Rather, He calls us to put everything beneath Him. A healthy value system allows us to enjoy blessings without allowing those blessings to become our gods.

Paul understood the difference. His greatest treasure was not what he possessed. His greatest treasure was Christ.

That truth also gives us perspective when life changes. Jobs can disappear. Money can decrease. Health can weaken. Recognition can fade. People can disappoint us. Even accomplishments that once seemed enormous eventually become memories.

Christ remains.

Furthermore, Acts 4:12 reminds us that salvation is found in no one else. The cross may look foolish to those who reject it, but Scripture says it is the power of God to those who are being saved. Therefore, the Christian value system begins and ends with Jesus.

Proverbs 23:7 reminds us that our inner thoughts reveal who we are. What we treasure in our hearts eventually influences how we live. If Christ truly holds first place within us, His presence will shape our decisions, relationships, priorities, and ambitions.

So, this morning, take an honest look at your value system. Are you measuring life by what the world applauds, or by what God calls eternal? Are you chasing things that cannot last, or are you investing in what cannot be taken away?

Good morning as you live among the living and not the perishing. May your heart recognize the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus your Lord.

Brief Prayer

Heavenly Father, help me examine my heart and recognize what I truly value. Keep me from allowing possessions, achievements, status, or recognition to take Your rightful place. Teach me to treasure Jesus above everything else. Give me wisdom to use every blessing for Your glory and courage to release anything that competes with You. May my thoughts, choices, and priorities reflect a life centered on Christ. Thank You for the salvation found only in Jesus and for the eternal hope secured through Him. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
