The Lord’s Prayer: Counting Blessings Through Prayer

The Lord’s Prayer – Counting Blessings

Introduction

The Lord’s Prayer devotion offers a perfect prayer pattern for connection with God, reminding us of His goodness and blessings.  Jesus gave His followers a perfect pattern for prayer in Matthew 6:9–13, commonly known as The Lord’s Prayer. These familiar words are more than a memorized passage. They are an invitation into a daily conversation with God that shapes our hearts, reminds us of His goodness, and helps us recognize His blessings throughout the day.

When we begin with “Our Father in heaven,” we remember that we are not alone. The Creator of the universe welcomes us as His children. Each morning becomes an opportunity to start the day grounded in that relationship. Before the demands of the day rush in, prayer re-centers our hearts on God’s presence and care.

“The prayer that is born of faith asks not only for blessings but rests in the certainty that God already knows and cares.” — C.S. Lewis

Opening Thought

Before reflecting on today’s message, take a quiet moment to read the words of The Lord’s Prayer slowly. Let each phrase settle into your heart as a reminder that Jesus Himself taught us how to approach the Father with trust, reverence, and gratitude.

Scripture

“Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. For Thine is

the Kingdom, and the power ,

and the glory.  Amen ”
(Matthew 6:9–13, ESV)

Reflection

Each morning, before my feet touch the floor, these words shape the first thoughts of the day. They are not just a routine but a reminder that the day begins with a loving Father who sees, knows, and cares. When the prayer starts with “Our Father,” it invites the heart to rest in the security of being God’s child.

“Give us this day our daily bread” turns our attention to the countless ways God provides. Every meal, every breath, every moment of strength becomes a blessing to count rather than a detail to overlook. Gratitude grows as we recognize that even the ordinary provisions of life come from God’s generous hand. What we often call “routine” is actually daily evidence of His faithful care.

“Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors” reminds us of the blessing of mercy. God’s forgiveness is a treasure beyond measure. Through Christ, guilt is lifted and fellowship with God is restored. When we extend forgiveness to others, we experience another blessing: freedom from bitterness. Hearts soften, relationships heal, and grace becomes visible in everyday life.

When we pray, “Your kingdom come, your will be done,” we begin looking for God’s hand in the details of our day. A conversation that brings encouragement, a quiet moment of peace during stress, or an unexpected opportunity to help someone—these become reminders that God’s kingdom is at work around us.

At night, the same prayer can gently close the day. As we repeat its familiar lines, we gather our joys, our concerns, and even our unfinished tasks and place them into God’s hands. Counting specific blessings—moments of kindness, protection, provision, and peace—turns worry into worship. The heart settles, and rest comes more easily.

The Lord’s Prayer is not meant to be rushed. It is meant to shape the rhythm of our lives. When prayed slowly and thoughtfully, it trains our hearts to notice God’s presence and goodness in every circumstance.
