Introduction
Explore the wisdom of James 1:19 slow to speak. Cultivate patience and humility in your conversations today.
Scripture
“My beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger;”
James 1:19
Supporting Quotation
“You have a tongue and a voice. These instruments of speech can be used destructively or employed constructively. You can use your tongue to slander, to gripe, to scold, to nag, and to quarrel; or you can bring it under the control of God’s Spirit and make it an instrument of blessing and praise.” — Billy Graham
Reflection
Immediate and spontaneous responses drive much of our posture in communication. Severe damage is done through spontaneity, voice tone, and poorly selected wording.
Restraint requires humility. a man to value obedience more than winning the moment, godliness more than ego. wisdom more than being right, and valuing the relationship.
Editor’s note: I made a note to myself in 1984 of 5 spiritual things I was deficient in. James 1:19 was first in the list and remains on the list. I have made progress . I pray for God to grant me meekness and humility.
Application
Today, make a conscious effort to apply James 1:19. In conversations—at home, work, or online—pause and listen fully before responding. Ask yourself: Is my reply necessary? Is it kind? Does it build up or tear down? Choose restraint over reaction, even when it’s hard. Start with one interaction where you prioritize listening and humility.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Word that instructs us to be quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger. Forgive me for the times my tongue has run ahead of wisdom and caused harm. Grant me the humility and self-control to value obedience to You over my ego or the need to “win” a moment. Help me treasure relationships more than being right. Fill me with Your Spirit so my words bring blessing, not destruction. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
