Gabriel’s Visit to Mary

Introduction

Gabriel’s visit to Mary marks a pivotal moment in Scripture. Discover how this encounter changed everything for humanity.  Luke 1:26–38 records one of the most sacred and pivotal moments in all of Scripture—the angel Gabriel’s visit to Mary, commonly known as the Annunciation. In this encounter, heaven interrupts ordinary life, and God reveals that His eternal plan of redemption is about to unfold through a humble, obedient young woman.

This passage reveals divine grace and favor, the miraculous work of the Holy Spirit, the true identity and mission of Jesus, and Mary’s remarkable humility and obedience. It is also a powerful reminder that God often accomplishes His greatest works through those the world might overlook.

Mary did not merely hear God’s Word—she trusted it, embraced it, and submitted her entire life to it. In doing so, she became a living testimony that nothing is impossible with God.

Quote

“Faith never knows where it is being led, but it loves and knows the One who is leading.” — Oswald Chambers

Scripture Reading

Luke 1:26–38 (NIV)
“In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary…”

Divine Grace and Favor

Gabriel’s greeting—“Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you”—reveals the heart of God’s grace. Mary was not chosen because of status, power, or achievement, but because of God’s sovereign will. Grace is never earned; it is freely given.

Mary had been prepared for this moment through a lifetime immersed in God’s Word. Growing up in a faithful Jewish home, she would have been taught the Scriptures diligently, just as commanded in Deuteronomy 6:7. God’s promises were not foreign to her—they were foundational.

Miraculous Conception and the Incarnation

When Mary asked, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?” she was not expressing doubt, but wonder. Gabriel’s answer revealed a miracle unlike any other: the Holy Spirit would overshadow her, and the power of the Most High would bring about the Incarnation.

This moment marks the beginning of God becoming flesh. Jesus did not begin to exist in Mary’s womb—He entered it. The eternal Son of God stepped into human history to redeem humanity.

Jesus’ Identity and Eternal Kingdom

Gabriel declared that the Lord God would give Jesus “the throne of his father David.” Mary understood the significance. She knew the prophecies—she knew the Messiah would come from David’s lineage and reign as King.

She also knew that Jesus would “reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.” This fulfilled the prophecy of Daniel 7:13–14, written around 167–164 BC, though some scholars date it as early as the 6th century BC—more than five centuries before Christ’s birth.

Mary’s Humility and Obedience

Mary’s response remains one of the greatest expressions of faith in Scripture: “I am the Lord’s servant. May your word to me be fulfilled.”

She accepted God’s plan without knowing all the consequences. Her obedience required courage, trust, and surrender. Mary models what it means to place one’s life fully in God’s hands.

Why Did God Choose Mary?

  1. Mary was of the right lineage.
  2. Mary was engaged to Joseph, whose heritage required travel to Bethlehem at the appointed time.
  3. Mary was a virgin, fulfilling Isaiah’s prophecy.
  4. Mary was from Nazareth, a place of humility and obscurity.

Advent Thread: Prophecy Fulfilled

As we approach Advent, each devotion focuses on prophecies fulfilled by the life of Jesus. Mathematician Peter Stoner has calculated

that the odds of one man fulfilling just eight messianic prophecies is 1 in 100 quadrillion.  A quadrillion is a thousand trillion.

Jesus fulfilled over 300 prophecies. He is not merely a great teacher or prophet—He is God.

Life Application

Mary’s story calls us to trust God’s Word even when His plans stretch our understanding. Like Mary, we should choose humility, obedience, and faith, trusting God to carry out every promise He has spoken.

Closing Prayer

Lord God, thank You for Your grace and faithfulness. Teach us to trust You as Mary did and to surrender our lives fully to Your will.   Amen.
