Introduction
Discover how Jesus fulfills Isaiah’s prophecy as the Shoot from the stump of Jesse in this Advent devotion. “There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.” (Isaiah 11:1) Isaiah gives us one of the most hope-filled prophecies in Scripture: out of what looks like a dead stump—cut down, hopeless, and forgotten—God will bring forth new life. Jesse, the father of King David, represents the royal line of Israel. Though that royal line would later be reduced to ruin, God promised something astonishing: a shoot would rise from that stump. A new King. A righteous King. A Messiah.
Before we reflect more deeply, consider the words of A.W. Tozer, who once wrote:
“Jesus is not one of many ways to approach God, nor is He the best of several ways; He is the only way.” — A.W. Tozer
Reflection
Isaiah prophesied more than 500 years before Christ’s birth that the Messiah would arise from the lineage of Jesse. Even though the royal line of David appeared cut down during Israel’s years of exile and spiritual decline, God declared with certainty that a living branch would come forth—One who would bear eternal fruit.
That branch is Jesus. He did not arrive with royal fanfare, military power, or earthly prestige. He came in humility, born in a manger, raised in obscurity, yet carrying within Himself the fullness of God’s promise. The long-awaited King arrived in a way no one expected—but exactly as God ordained.
Isaiah continues:
“Righteousness shall be the belt of His waist, and faithfulness the belt of His loins.” (Isaiah 11:5)
In ancient times, a belt held everything together. Isaiah uses this imagery to teach us what secures and defines the Messiah:
righteousness and faithfulness.
- Righteousness means every decision He makes is morally right, perfectly just, and eternally good.
- Faithfulness means His character is steady, unchanging, trustworthy, and true—He keeps every covenant and fulfills every promise.
Jesus is not only the promised King—He is the righteous King whose reign is marked by justice, mercy, and perfect integrity. No wonder the wise men were watching for the sign of His coming! They understood that the ancient prophecy pointed toward Someone far greater than any earthly ruler.
And this same King invites us today to be adopted into His kingdom—to receive new life from the same Spirit that raised Him and to walk in the fruit He produces.
So good morning, and welcome to another day of grace as you live under the reign of the Shoot from the stump of Jesse, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Life Application
Today, ask the Lord to shape you with the same qualities that define your King—righteousness and faithfulness. Invite Him to prune what is unfruitful and strengthen what is growing. You belong to the Branch who brings life out of stumps, hope out of barrenness, and renewal out of ruin.
Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus, Shoot from the stump of Jesse, thank You for bringing new life into what once was broken. Shape my heart with Your righteousness and anchor my steps in Your faithfulness. Help me walk in Your fruit today and reflect Your kingdom wherever I go. Amen.

Advent Thread
This Advent season, we are focusing on prophecies fulfilled by Jesus. The odds of one person fulfilling just eight Old Testament prophecies is 1 in 100,000,000,000,000,000 (100 quadrillion). Jesus fulfilled over 300. He is not merely a man—He is GOD. (Source: Mathematician Peter Stoner)
