Introduction
Explore the question, what is truth devotion, and understand its significance through the lens of Jesus Christ’s teachings. Pontius Pilate’s haunting question still echoes across history: “What is truth?” (John 18:37–38). In that moment, Truth Himself stood before him—Jesus Christ—yet Pilate could not see it. Today, the world still chases truth through intellect, philosophy, and shifting cultural opinions. But Jesus gives us a far simpler and more profound invitation: “Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.” Truth is not an idea; truth is a Person.

Reflection
When Jesus speaks of truth, He isn’t pointing us to an academic concept or a philosophical construct—He is pointing us to Himself. Jesus’ assertion in John 8:31–32 is not merely informational, but transformational: “If you abide in my word… you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Freedom and truth are tied not to intellectual mastery but to spiritual obedience, spiritual listening, and spiritual abiding.
Our Catholic brothers of the 1600s practiced a beautiful spiritual discipline known as Lectio Divina—a slow, prayerful reading of Scripture that invites God to speak directly to the heart. The world tells us to analyze the Bible. Jesus tells us to abide in it. Lectio Divina reminds us that the Scriptures are not merely read—they are received.
Quotation:
C.S. Lewis once observed, “We are not necessarily doubting that God will do the best for us; we are wondering how painful the best will turn out to be.” True spiritual listening requires humility—a willingness to let God define truth even when it challenges our assumptions.
And yet this question lingers: Why are there so many different church traditions, denominations, and expressions of Christianity? Is it not because generation after generation has sought to understand truth more deeply? Humans gravitate toward clarity, understanding, and conviction—and often land in different places. Still, Jesus pulls our eyes away from all secondary questions and anchors our hearts in Himself:
“I am the way, and the truth, and the life.” (John 14:6)
Truth is not found in systems. It is not found in traditions or in study alone.
Truth is found in Jesus Christ.
And when we hear His voice—through Scripture, through prayer, through quieted hearts—we find that truth is not something we must chase. It is Someone who meets us where we are.
Life Application
- Set aside 10 quiet minutes today to read Scripture slowly—consider practicing Lectio Divina with John 14:6.
- Ask the Holy Spirit to help you hear Jesus’ voice personally and clearly.
- Reflect on Proverbs 23:7: “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.” What “truths” are shaping your thoughts today?
- Invite Jesus to redefine truth in your heart—not by the world’s standards, but by His Word.
Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus, You are Truth made flesh. Quiet my mind, still my spirit, and open my heart to hear Your voice. Remove every false belief and replace it with the truth of Your Word. Teach me to abide in You so that I may know the freedom that only You give. Amen.
