Hardening of the Heart

Spiritual Callousness can happen so slowly that we don’t even see it coming. Like plaque building in the arteries, the deceitfulness of sin works silently, until spiritual disaster strikes. This devotion reminds us how to guard our hearts before it’s too late.

“But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called ‘today,’ that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.” Hebrews 3:13

Let Us Pray

Lord, open our eyes to the sin that so easily entangles us. Soften our hearts, and give us the courage to lovingly exhort one another. Keep us walking in Your light, always alert and always obedient. Amen.

A Warning Against Hardening

Sin is sneaky. It doesn’t shout. It whispers. Like the gradual buildup of cholesterol in our arteries, sin slowly and silently clogs our spiritual sensitivity. One compromise here, a neglected prayer there—and over time, our heart becomes calloused. We no longer feel conviction, stop caring and justify instead of repent.

The writer of Hebrews gives us a clear remedy: exhort one another daily. That means lovingly encouraging friends to stay alert, to fight sin, and to pursue righteousness. Exhortation isn’t about condemnation. It’s about care.

The heart, in biblical language, isn’t just emotion. It represents the mind, will, and inner being. “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he” (Proverbs 23:7). That’s why guarding our heart is so important. Because who we are flows from what our heart believes and entertains.

Deceitfulness of sin

Left unchecked, sin leads to spiritual death. But grace is always available when we confess and repent. God promises to remove our heart of stone and give us a heart of flesh (Ezekiel 36:26). But we must stay vigilant.

So, let us speak the truth to one another with grace. Let us encourage confession, not concealment. And let us walk in the sunlight of God’s mercy—cheering one another on as we go.
