In John 11:44, we see Jesus call Lazarus out of the tomb, commanding, “Unbind him, and let him go.” This simple command holds a powerful truth: when Jesus calls us into new life, we must also remove the “grave clothes” of our past in order to walk freely with Him.
Walking Out of the Grave
Lazarus had died and was bound for the grave—wrapped tightly in linens, prepared for eternal rest. Yet when Jesus spoke, death had to obey. Lazarus came forth alive, still wrapped in the garments of death. Jesus didn’t stop at resurrection—He told others to help remove those bindings.
When we are baptized, we die to sin and are raised to walk in newness of life (Romans 6:4). But like Lazarus, many of us still carry the trappings of our old life. Bitterness, shame, fear, guilt—these are the grave clothes that keep us from living fully in Christ’s freedom.
Removing your grave clothes means releasing those old ways of thinking and living. It means accepting God’s grace and stepping boldly into your identity as His workmanship (Ephesians 2:10).
A Simple Question
Have you removed your grave clothes in order to freely walk with Christ?
It’s not enough to be called from the tomb—we must also be unbound. Today, ask God to help you identify what’s still clinging to your spirit and holding you back.
A Prayer for Today
Lord Jesus, thank You for calling me out of the grave. Help me to shed every layer of my old self so I can walk freely in the new life You’ve given me. Unbind my heart, renew my mind, and guide me in Your truth. Amen.
