Scripture Focus
Mark 8:36 — “For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?” Matthew 6:33 — “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Proverbs 23:7a — “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.”
Life Application
Americans are blessed to live in a society where opportunity abounds. Through hard work, perseverance, education, and determination, many people achieve remarkable success. God created us in His image and gifted us with talents, abilities, creativity, and sound minds. Therefore, we should strive for excellence and faithfully develop the gifts He has entrusted to us. However, Jesus asks a question that reaches far beyond financial success or professional achievement. “For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?” The Lord is not condemning wealth, success, or ambition. Instead, He is challenging us to examine our ultimate priorities. What is your endgame? Are you pursuing worldly success at the expense of your walk with Christ with decisions shaped by eternal values or by temporary rewards? Are you investing as much energy into your spiritual life as you invest into your career, hobbies, finances, or personal goals?
The Danger
The danger is not success itself. It comes when success becomes our master. Many people spend years climbing ladders only to discover they were leaning against the wrong wall. Jesus teaches that eternal matters must come first. When we seek God’s kingdom above everything else, He provides wisdom, direction, peace, and purpose. Matthew 6:33 provides the proper order: “Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness.” Notice the word first. Jesus did not say seek God after everything else is accomplished. He said seek Him first. When God occupies first place in our hearts, our priorities become aligned with His purposes. The editor’s note captures an important truth: keep effort and opportunity in balance while investing in both life and eternity. Work diligently. Use your gifts wisely. Pursue worthwhile goals. Yet never allow temporary achievements to overshadow eternal priorities. Nothing is more important than your relationship with your Heavenly Father. Today is a good day to evaluate your priorities. Ask yourself where your time, attention, money, and thoughts are directed. As Proverbs reminds us, “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.” What occupies your heart will ultimately shape your life.
Let Us Pray
Heavenly Father, help me keep my priorities aligned with Your will. Give me wisdom to pursue opportunities faithfully while never losing sight of eternity. Teach me to seek first Your kingdom and to place You above every earthly ambition. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
