Introduction
Discover the renewing power of the Holy Spirit through this encouraging devotion on God’s life-giving breath. There are moments in life when our souls feel dry, weary, and exhausted. We may continue through routines, responsibilities, and even worship while inwardly longing for fresh strength and renewed passion. In those moments, we do not merely need better circumstances—we need the breath of God.
Throughout Scripture, God’s breath represents life, renewal, power, and the presence of the Holy Spirit. When Jesus appeared to His disciples after the resurrection, He breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” That sacred moment symbolized new life, new courage, and a new mission. God still breathes upon His people today through His Spirit.
The classic hymn “Breathe on Me, Breath of God” beautifully captures the believer’s desire for spiritual renewal and surrender. It is a prayer asking God to fill every part of our lives so that we reflect His love, truth, wisdom, and holiness.
If today you feel spiritually tired, emotionally drained, or uncertain about the future, pause for a moment and invite the Holy Spirit to refresh your heart again.
“The great thing to remember is that though our feelings come and go, His love for us does not.” — C.S. Lewis

Reflection
The Bible begins with the breath of God bringing life into creation. In Genesis, God breathed into Adam and humanity became a living soul. Throughout Scripture, breath symbolizes life, movement, renewal, and divine presence.
When Jesus breathed upon His disciples in John 20:22, it was more than a symbolic gesture. The disciples had been fearful, confused, and uncertain after the crucifixion. Yet in one moment, Jesus filled them with peace and promised the power of the Holy Spirit. The same Spirit that empowered the early church still works within believers today.
Many Christians try to live spiritually exhausted lives. We attempt to serve God in our own strength, wisdom, and determination. Eventually we become discouraged because human effort alone cannot sustain spiritual vitality. We need the Holy Spirit daily.
The hymn “Breathe on Me, Breath of God” expresses deep surrender. It is not merely asking for comfort—it is asking for transformation. The prayer says, “Fill me with life anew, that I may love what Thou dost love, and do what Thou wouldst do.” That is true spiritual renewal.
The Spirit Breathes
The Holy Spirit comforts us in grief, convicts us of sin, guides us into truth, strengthens us in weakness, and reminds us of God’s promises. He softens hardened hearts and replaces fear with peace. He teaches us wisdom beyond human understanding.
Sometimes the Spirit’s work is dramatic and powerful. Other times it is quiet and gentle—like a whisper in prayer, a verse that suddenly speaks to your heart, or peace that settles over you in the middle of uncertainty.
Many people today are emotionally overwhelmed and spiritually depleted. Anxiety, division, noise, and endless distractions leave little room for stillness. Yet God still invites His children to pause long enough to receive His breath again.
Perhaps today you need fresh courage. Perhaps you need healing from disappointment or renewal after spiritual dryness. Maybe you simply need assurance that God is near. The Holy Spirit is not distant from you. He is the Helper Jesus promised.
The beautiful truth is that God specializes in breathing life into weary souls. He restores joy where discouragement has settled, revives hope where fear has taken root and gives wisdom when confusion clouds our minds.
The Spirit also transforms our character. Ezekiel prophesied that God would remove hearts of stone and replace them with hearts of flesh. The Holy Spirit softens us, making us more compassionate, forgiving, patient, and loving. Spiritual maturity is not self-improvement; it is Spirit-led transformation.
As believers, we should regularly pray:
“Lord, breathe on me again. Fill me with Your Spirit. Renew my heart, my mind, and my purpose.”
God delights in answering prayers like that.
