Christians reflecting on carrying the Name of Christ with integrity and faithfulness

Name Image Likeness | Carrying the Name of Christ Faithfully

Introduction

Discover the deeper meaning of Exodus 20:7 and what it means to carry the Name of Christ with authenticity and integrity.  The world of college athletics has made the term “NIL” famous — Name, Image, and Likeness. Athletes today understand that what they represent matters. Their character, reputation, and influence are attached to their name. But long before NIL became part of sports culture, God addressed a far deeper spiritual truth concerning His own Name.  Exodus 20:7 is often reduced to merely avoiding profanity, but the command reaches much deeper into the heart of a believer’s life. God is not only concerned with what we say about His Name, but how we carry it. Every Christian bears the Name of Christ before a watching world.

As you reflect today, remember that your words, attitudes, choices, and character all communicate something about Jesus. We are called not merely to speak His Name, but to represent it faithfully.

Key Scripture

“You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.” — Exodus 20:7

Reflection

The third commandment may be one of the most misunderstood verses in all of Scripture. Many people interpret it simply as “don’t cuss” or “don’t misuse God’s name verbally.” While that certainly includes honoring God with our speech, the Hebrew language reveals a much broader and more challenging meaning.

The Hebrew word translated “take” means to lift up, carry, or bear. It paints the picture of someone representing something larger than themselves. An ambassador bears the honor of a nation. A child bears the reputation of a family. In the same way, believers bear the Name of God.

The word translated “vain” is the Hebrew word shav, meaning empty, false, hollow, deceptive, or worthless — something that appears real on the outside but lacks substance within. It is the idea of counterfeit faith.

Put together, Exodus 20:7 could be understood this way:

“Do not carry the Name of the Lord in an empty, false, or worthless way.”

That changes the entire perspective of the commandment.

This is not merely about avoiding a phrase. It is about avoiding hypocrisy. It is about refusing to wear God’s Name externally while living disconnected from Him internally.

Jesus addressed this issue directly when He said:

“This people honor me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; in vain do they worship me.” — Matthew 15:8-9

God has never been impressed with outward religious performance that lacks inward surrender. He is not looking for polished appearances while hearts remain cold and distant.

The challenge for every Christian is this: Does my life reflect the Name I carry?

The phrase “Name, Image, and Likeness” takes on powerful spiritual meaning for believers. Christians are called to carry the Name of Christ, reflect the Image of Christ, and grow into the Likeness of Christ.

The Apostle Paul described believers as “living letters” known and read by all people. In other words, many people will form their opinion about Jesus based on the conduct of those who claim His Name.

That reality should humble us.

Our attitudes matter. Our integrity matters. The way we speak to family members, conduct business and respond under pressure matters.

Proverbs 23:7 reminds us:

“As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.”

Eventually, what lives in the heart will reveal itself in daily life.

Thankfully, God does not call us to perfection through our own strength. He calls us to daily surrender. The Holy Spirit continues shaping believers into the likeness of Jesus one day at a time.

The goal of the Christian life is not simply appearing religious. The goal is becoming more like Christ from the inside out.

When our hearts genuinely belong to Him, our lives begin reflecting His character naturally. His Name is no longer carried in emptiness, but with authenticity, humility, and love.

Quote

“Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.” — C.S. Lewis

Lord, help me carry Your Name with honor and sincerity. Forgive me for the times my words and actions have not reflected Your heart.
