Seeking God first brings peace

First Things First: Seeking God Above Worry

Seeking God first brings peace
Put God First

Introduction

Learn the importance of seeking God first to combat anxiety and find stability amidst life’s constant changes and worries.  Worry about tomorrow is not a modern invention. Long before smartphones, economic forecasts, or medical alerts, humanity wrestled with anxiety about what lies ahead. Over 3,000 years ago, Solomon observed the restless nature of the human heart in Ecclesiastes, noting how easily our thoughts drift toward uncertainty and fear. Though times change, the source of worry remains remarkably consistent.  Matthew provided the answer.

“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
Matthew 6:33

Today, worry arises from shifting health conditions, volatile business environments, strained relationships, global instability, and even unpredictable weather patterns. The common denominator is change. When life feels unstable, our hearts search for control—and when control feels out of reach, worry rushes in.

Reflection

Jesus never denied that life brings legitimate concerns. He acknowledged that we would face real needs, real pressures, and real trials. What He challenged was not the existence of concern, but the priority we assign to it. In Matthew 6, Jesus redirects the anxious heart by shifting its focus: seek first the kingdom of God.

Worry, when left unchecked, compounds itself. If it were a penalty in football, it would resemble “unnecessary roughness” or “piling on.” One concern leads to another, and soon the heart is burdened by imagined futures that may never arrive. Jesus calls us out of that spiral—not by denying reality, but by restoring order.

When God is first, everything else finds its proper place. Seeking Him first means trusting His character before demanding answers, resting in His sovereignty before rehearsing worst-case scenarios, and anchoring our identity in His promises rather than our circumstances.

Jesus offered His disciples this assurance on the eve of His crucifixion:

“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
John 16:33

Peace, according to Jesus, is not the absence of trouble—it is the presence of confidence in Him. When we place Christ first, worry loses its authority. It no longer governs our thoughts or dictates our responses.

Life Application

As you survey the challenges of today, pause and listen for the gentle voice of Jesus saying, “Come, follow Me.” Then hear His clarity: “Seek Me first.” Begin your day by ordering your priorities around Him—before the news, before the to-do list, before the “what ifs.”

Practically, this may look like offering your concerns to God in prayer, opening Scripture before opening email, or choosing gratitude instead of fear when uncertainty arises. Over time, these small acts of obedience train the heart to trust.
