Introduction

Are you really a self-made man? God’s direction shapes your steps. Discover how His guidance turns every plan into His perfect will.  Are you really a self-made man, or has every step of your journey been shaped by God’s sovereign hand? Life may seem like a series of personal decisions, yet God’s direction is always at work, guiding the course. This truth challenges us to see that our accomplishments are not self-made, but God-made, with Him steering the ship from start to finish.

Main Body

The book of Proverbs reminds us, “The heart of man plans his way, but the LORD establishes his steps.” (Proverbs 16:9). We are encouraged to plan and prepare for life. After all, “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” (Proverbs 29:18). Yet, planning alone does not guarantee the path ahead. God lovingly directs, reroutes, and shapes our journey through roadblocks, detours, and storms that form our character. James gives us the right perspective on life’s challenges: “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.” (James 1:2-4). Trials are not accidents; they are divine tools, shaping us to be steadfast and complete in Him.

Paul echoes this truth in Philippians 1:6: “And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” We may think we are self-made, but in reality, we are being shaped by the Master’s hands every day. When we look back over a long life, the wisdom of the old saying becomes clear: “We cast our boat upon the sea, and the Lord controls the rudder and trims the sails.” Even our thoughts reveal who we are, for “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he” (Proverbs 23:7).
